Paddling Into The Colder Months

So Long Summer...

...but hello to banging sunrises and epic sunsets.

We know that there are a lot of folks out here that are 'fair weather' SUPers, and that isn't a bad thing. There's no law to say you need to paddle when it's colder.

But...you could be missing out on things you just don't get in the Spring/Summer months.

Autumn and winter sunsets and sunrises appear better because the sun sits lower and the cloud type means you get some incredible sights.

What Does This Mean

This typically means that if you want to see these events, you're going to need to change up your SUP gear.

Let's start from the bottom up;

Boots - becaue the air temperature is getting colder, you're going to want to invest in some kind of footwear that will help keep the warmth in, rather than the water out. Booties are great and relatively inexpensive.

Clothing - whether you choose a wetsuit, dry suit, wet suit top or waterproof kag tops, you're going to want to do this bit right. Go too thick and you can't use it in the autumn without over heating. Go too light and it won't keep you warm enough in the winter. The good middle ground is to find a dry suit top so you can layer up when it start to gets colder.

Gloves - Keeping your hands warm stops the misery of having numb fingertips. These don't need to break the bank, but it's worth getting something that can be used throughout both seasons.

Hat - You can invest a neoprene beanie, but this is necessary if you're flat water paddling. Just make sure you keep something close by in case it starts to get chilly.

As with all paddling, we always recommend that you have a good buoyancy aid, the correct leash, your phone in a phone pouch and to keep kit dry, a good dry bag
