Choosing your first Paddle Board:

Choosing your first SUP can be a challenging and anxiety provoking process with many companies now in the market selling very cheap boards at lower quality specifications and important safety equipment missing.

Rest assured FatStick will only supply SUP & Kayak equipment of the highest quality and a package parts were include vital safety components such as the QR waste belt for flowing water. 

For your first paddleboard, you want something nice and wide and stable. There’s nothing worse than buying a cheap SUP board that is too narrow making the board very unstable and means you fall off quite often getting cold wet and disappointed. 

We recommend a board around 10 1/2 foot long and 32 inch wide for your first paddle board. The important thing here is that the width of the board goes throughout the whole board from nose to tail. We often see cheaper stand-up paddle boards with quite narrow noses and tails and again this will make the board quite unstable. 

Most of our paddle boards come in the 5 inch thickness, which also makes the board a lot more stable than 6 inch thick SUP boards. 6 inch paddle boards tend to lift the rider very high off the water making the board “top heavy” and quite “tippy“ rail to rail. Additionally, 6 inch boards gets negatively affected a lot more by sea chop on the water or high winds hitting the rail of the board making it a lot easier to blow out to sea.
